Sterling Elliott
cello

Daniel Hope
Music Director and concertmaster

Embrace the elegant structure and exquisite restraint of Austrian composer Joseph Haydn, one of music’s most prominent “architects” during the Classical period. American cellist Sterling Elliott joins Daniel Hope and New Century for Haydn’s beloved first cello concerto, a virtuoso showpiece for the instrument. In the second half of the program, selections from Igor Stravinsky’s playful ballet Pulcinella offer a contrasting 20th century response to Haydn, using the amorous hijinks of the famous Italian clown to tinker unpredictably (and to the delight of modern audiences) with the shapes and patterns of centuries-old melodies.

PROGRAM:

Christoph Willibald Gluck
“Dance of the Furies” from Orfeo ed Euridice

Ernest Bloch
“Prayer” from Jewish Life, No. 1

Franz Joseph Haydn
Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major

INTERMISSION

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Six Contredanses, K. 462

Igor Stravinsky (arr. A. Williams)
Suite Italienne (adapted from the ballet Pulcinella),
arranged for solo violin and strings

Please Note: As of Monday, January 29, the originally announced program has been changed. Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite has been replaced by Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne, featuring material adapted by Stravinsky from the ballet Pulcinella, arranged by Adrian Williams for strings and solo violin. Mozart’s Six Contredanses have also been added to the program.
