Jenny Douglass

Jenny Douglass

VIOLA

Jenny Douglass began her musical life at age four as a Suzuki violinist in Chapel Hill, NC.  She was introduced to the viola at age thirteen during a summer music camp in the Berkshires and has never looked back.  Jenny has earned degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School.  Her principal teachers have included Lynne Ramsey, Karen Tuttle, and Eugene Lehner.

Since 1999, Jenny has been the Principal Violist of the Marin Symphony, where she recently performed Walton’s Viola Concerto.  Other featured appearances in Marin include Bruch's Double Concerto for Clarinet and Viola with Richard Stoltzman and Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante with Jeremy Constant.   Ms. Douglass is a frequent substitute with the San Francisco Symphony and has performed with them in Davies Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, and on several European tours

Jenny began playing with the New Century Chamber Orchestra in 2008 and became a member of the group in 2010.  She performed on their two recent cds, “Together” and “Live.”  As a regular performer with the NYC-based Orpheus Chamber Orchestra since 1992, Jenny has toured North and South America, Europe, and Asia.  She performed on several of their CD's recorded for Deutsche Grammophon and EMI, including their 2001 Grammy Award Winning CD “Shadow Dances.”

Jenny was a member of the Laurel Ensemble for five years, a tenure which included 51 chamber music concerts, 6 world premieres, a tour to Hong Kong, a cd aptly titled “Laurel Ensemble Live,” and 132 educational concerts for 9000 children in San Francisco’s public elementary schools.  Jenny’s love for chamber music has taken her to festivals in Crested Butte, CO, Sarasota, FL, Taos, NM, San Antonio, TX, Warren, VT, Stockbridge, MA, and Homer, AK.

Jenny enjoys the challenge of balancing a busy concert schedule with an active family life.  She lives in Mill Valley with her husband and their two sons, ages 7 and 9.  She can usually be found chauffeuring, cooking, cheering, or playing catch.  In other moments, Jenny is preparing to test for a black belt in Tae Kwon Do in June 2013. This will officially mark the end of viola jokes. Aiyaah!
