San Francisco RISING
MAY 14 – MAY 16, 2027
Photo: Thomas Hampson, Vocalist; Daniel Hope, Music Director and Concertmaster
Take a deep dive into a century of transformation in San Francisco through an immersive blend of music, narration, and multimedia imagery. Curated by Daniel Hope and Thomas Hampson with the New Century Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco RISING unfolds like a living historical documentary in music, tracing the city’s evolution from the Gold Rush to the signing of the United Nations Charter in 1945 at the historic Herbst Theatre.
Through music by composers including Charles Ives, Ernest Bloch, and George Gershwin, alongside traditional songs rooted in the city’s multicultural beginnings, the program brings San Francisco’s story of reinvention to life.
Trace a century of transformation in one of America’s most dynamic cities, shaped by resilience, migration, and reinvention, through the enduring power of music.
