Dawn Harms, Violinist

Dawn Harms leads a colorful life in the music and entertainment world. She not only has the dramatic life of performing with the San Francisco Opera for six months each year, but also she conducts, teaches, plays jazz violin, designs and plays children’s concerts, leads a chamber orchestra and even has time to hike and ski.

She received her Bachelor of Music degree from The New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Dorothy Delay and Josef Gingold, and her Masters Degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Ms. Harms made her Carnegie Hall debut as a member of the Stony Brook Trio. From 1985 to 1996 she was first violinist of the Harrington String Quartet, which was in residence at West Texas A & M University in Amarillo, Texas. The HSQ won first prize at the prestigious Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition and was featured on WFMT (Chicago) and WQXR (New York).

Ms. Harms has appeared as soloist with the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra and the New England Chamber Ensemble on tours to South America, Israel, Mexico and Europe. She was selected to be the first violinist with the New Zealand String Quartet on a tour of New Zealand. For five years she played first violin in the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra and coached chamber music and performed at the Killington Music Festival in Vermont for four summers. She recently joined the faculty at Stanford University, and is the violinist of the Stanford Piano Trio.

Accomplished on both violin and viola, she performed and Principal Violist of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra for the 1995 season, and in 1996 joined the first violins of the orchestra. Ms. Harms continues to busy schedule of performing all over the United States, including engagements with the NCCO, the Dallas Chamber Orchestra and, as co-concertmaster, with Pro Musica in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Ms. Harms, a strong advocate for children’s music education, was conductor and music director of the Amarillo Youth Orchestra. She has designed and continues to perform educational concerts throughout Texas and California. This summer Ms. Harms will be the Music Director and is co-founder of the Monument Valley Regional Music Festival in Utah. It is a series of concerts and outreach programs for Navaho reservations.

In 1998 Ms. Harms traveled to New Zealand to collaborate on a CD for violin and harp the Carolyn Mills, harpist of the New Zealand Symphony. It has just been released on the ATOL label and has been nominated for a Grammy Award.
