March Community Food Drive
The New Century Chamber Orchestra is pleased to collaborate with the League of American Orchestras to support our local foodbanks. March 2010 is Orchestras Feeding America month and the need in our communities has never been greater. The New York Times cited a recent Department of Agriculture study, saying, “The number of Americans who lived in households that lacked consistent access to adequate food soared last year to 49 million.”
The New Century Chamber Orchestra collected 183.45 pounds of food for community food banks around the Bay Area, March 3-7, during performances Serenades and Dances, which attracted over 1200 patrons at venues in Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Francisco and San Rafael. New Century’s first food drive was a partnership between local food banks, the communities at each venue, and the orchestra’s board, staff, and musicians.
At Thursday’s performance, the first of the set, at the First Congregational Church of Berkeley, orchestra musicians, staff, board, and patrons contributed 39.6 pounds to the food drive for the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
On Friday, March 5, New Century patrons and board members at the First United Methodist Church of Palo Alto contributed 85.25 pounds of food to Second Harvest of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.
The New Century Chamber Orchestra gave an open rehearsal (Wed, March 3) and a performance (Sat, March 6) at the Herbst Theatre, where 46.6 pounds of food were collected for the San Francisco Food Bank.
At the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center in San Rafael, patrons contributed 12 pounds of food towards the Jewish Family and Children’s Services of Marin Food Pantry.
